Madalena do Mar is a parish (freguesia) in the Municipality (concelho) of Ponta do Sol, on the Portuguese island of Madeira. It has a population of 508 (April 2021). The main economic activity in the municipality is the cultivation of bananas.

History

According to legend, the place was founded in 1457 by an enigmatic nobleman named Henrique Alemão (Portuguese for: Henry the German). This is said to have been the Polish king Władysław III, who was not killed in the Battle of Varna on November 10, 1444, but managed to escape. The Portuguese king gave him asylum and allowed him to live unrecognized on the island of Madeira, which was still to be populated.

In 1582, the independent municipality of Madalena do Mar was created by splitting off from the municipality of Ponta do Sol.
